The project reimagines the Iturripe area as a continuous landscape where architecture, public space and the Aramaio River form a single, cohesive environment. By relocating disruptive infrastructures and renaturalising the riverbank, the proposal restores the ecological value of the river and transforms it into an active, green public space for sports, leisure and everyday life.
A new network of pedestrian and cycling routes reconnects the site with the surrounding neighbourhoods and the Mondragon Unibertsitatea campus, encouraging sustainable mobility and reclaiming the riverfront as a shared civic space.

Programme and Functionality: A New Unified Iturripe

The project brings together Iturripe I and Iturripe II into one integrated sports facility. Access, circulation and services are centralised to improve efficiency and enable shared use across the entire complex. A new connecting volume links the existing building with the new pavilion, organising flows between athletes and spectators and positioning the main entrance along the natural access from Avenida Uribarri. Iturripe I is reorganised on the ground floor to create new entrances, relocate the café, and update the building to current regulations.

The New Pavilion

The new pavilion is conceived as an open and active building, visually connected to the public space through a fully glazed façade facing the river. The main sports court sits at –3.00 m, together with changing rooms and storage, while multipurpose rooms benefit from generous natural light through double-height spaces and glazed partitions.nCirculation is structured through a central spine that separates users from spectators and hosts administrative areas beneath the stands. The new fronton is positioned with its optimal north-facing orientation and attached to the central volume of courts and stands, creating a compact and unified ensemble.
